The space above, was designed for a corporate technology business in Manhattan. The 3D computer model was created in AutoCAD R14, and the images were rendered in 3D-Studio MAX. The 6000 square foot office space required no private offices; the only "hard" program elements were the two conference rooms, employee lounge, pantry, LAN room, storage room, and shower.

The existing conditions provided a main space [as shown in the plan] which was connected to another equally sized space [not shown] via a narrow corridor at the lower right of the plan. This tenuous connection was exaggerated by angling the back of the elevator lobby wall to provide a long view [and circulation corridor] through the space as seen in perspective #3.

The resulting spaces all play off of this primary design element, creating a series of forced perspectives and funnel-like circulation zones. The pantry is situated at the end of one of these corridors, where it provides an exterior view which works to emphasize a transparent zone clear across the width of the plan, as seen in perspective #1.

The elevator lobby itself [perspective #2], provides security after-hours, by using two rolling "barn doors"; when these doors are dead-bolted, the space is accessed through a service door by using a key-card. During business hours, these barn doors are rolled open and, through extensive use of glass, the light from the window wall beyond is invited into the core of the building.

The rigidity of the existing orthogonal geometry is obscured by these transparencies and the trajectory of the circulation zones, while at the same time the new geometry helps to maintain a new, yet complementary reading of the space.
